Q. Could you tell us about your place of birth, your age, and the environment you grew up in?

I AM CURRENTLY 22 YEARS OLD AND I WAS BORN AND RAISED IN MIAMI, FLORIDA! MY MOM IS FROM THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, AND MY DAD IS FROM CUBA, SO I GREW UP SURROUNDED BY A LOT OF BACHATA AND REGGEATON WHICH I DEVELOPED A GRUDGE AGAINST (A RESULT OF MANY FAMILY PARTIES LASTING WAY TOO LONG AS A CHILD) THAT I’VE SINCE RECONCILED WITH BECAUSE, AS AN ADULT I’VE COME TO REALIZE ALOT OF THAT MUSIC FUCKING RULES. ALSO DURING MY UPBRINGING I REMEMBER WITNESSING THE PREVALENCE OF 305 / 945 JOOK MUSIC (I.E. GRIND MODE, HAITIAN BOP, DJ CHIPMAN, TRE OH FIE, CHAD, ETC.) AND I THINK THAT THIS IS THE GENRE THAT STUCK WITH ME THE MOST, IN THE WAKE OF FREESTYLE AND BOOTY BASS IT MASHES UP SAMPLED AND SEQUENCED 808 BREAKBEATS WITH BALTIMORE JERSEY CLUB WITH FOOTWORK-LIKE VOCAL CHOPS LAYERED OVER EVERYTHING (2FIE - TO THE GROUND SOLO IS A GOOD EXAMPLE). Q. What first sparked your interest in music? What was the first piece of music you ever bought with your own money?

I’M NOT QUITE SURE WHEN I FIRST BECAME INTERESTED IN MUSIC, AS FAR AS I CAN RECALL IT’S ALWAYS BEEN A MAJOR PART OF MY LIFE SINCE I WAS VERY YOUNG. IF I HAD TO TRY AND PINPOINT IT, A LOT OF THE SOUNDTRACKS OF THE MEDIA I WAS CONSUMING WHEN I WAS VERY YOUNG LAID THE FOUNDATION FOR MY INTEREST IN ELECTRONIC MUSIC, MOST NOTABLY THE TEKU SONGS FEATURED IN THE HOT WHEELS: ACCELERACERS MOVIES, AND THE SOUNDTRACK TO THE GAME MIRROR’S EDGE COMPOSED BY SOLAR FIELDS. BOTH OF THESE BEING PIVOTAL ENTRY POINTS FOR ME, THE FORMER CONSISTING OF SICK DOWNTEMPO, MINIMAL TECHNO, BREAKBEAT, AND ACID, AND THE LATTER EXPOSING ME TO SOUND DESIGN HEAVY AMBIENT, IDM, AND DRUM & BASS. THE TONY HAWK AND EA SKATE SERIES FLESHED ME OUT AS A KID AS WELL, INTRODUCING ME TO A LOT OF OLD SCHOOL HIPHOP, PUNK, THRASH, AND SKA WHICH I WOULD DIVE DEEPER INTO LATER ON AS A TEENAGER. MY FIRST PURCHASE I CAN REMEMBER, I HAD TO HAVE BEEN NO OLDER THAN 10 YEARS OLD, WHEN I BOUGHT NEW BOYZ - TIE ME DOWN FOR 99 CENTS OFF ITUNES LOL. THEN I BOUGHT THE BANGARANG EP BY SKRILLEX.

Q. Your music seems to carry influences from 90s hardcore labels like Bloody Fist Records, Digital Hardcore Recordings, etc. How did you first discover this old-school hardcore sound?

ABSOLUTELY! I CONSIDER MYSELF A BLOODY FIST RIPOFF ABOVE ALL ELSE HAHA. I FIRST FOUND OUT ABOUT GABBER AND DIGITAL HARDCORE THROUGH MY OBSESSION WITH EXTREME MUSIC THROUGHOUT HIGHSCHOOL. I BEGAN WITH PUNK / HARDCORE, THEN IT ESCALATED INTO POWERVIOLENCE AND GRINDCORE, UNTIL I FOUND MYSELF LISTENING TO STRAIGHT HARSH NOISE AND POWER ELECTRONICS. THE LOUDER AND FASTER, THE BETTER. DURING THIS PURSUIT I STUMBLED ACROSS “CUNTFACE” BY NASENBLUTEN AND IT COMPLETELY CHANGED MY LIFE. IT WAS LOUD, ANGRY AS FUCK, FAST AS ALL HELL, DID NOT LET UP AT ALL, AND IT HIT AS HARD AS A FUCKING TRUCK. IT WAS LIKE THE SONG HATED ME AS A LISTENER. TO ME IT WAS THE PERFECT COMBINATION OF EVERYTHING I HAD BEEN INTO PRIOR AND IT DEEPLY SURPRISED ME HOW CRIMINALLY UNDER-EXPLORED AND UNDERAPPRECIATED THE CROSSOVER BETWEEN PUNK AND GABBER IS! 

Q. What was the first hardcore event or rave you ever experienced? What kind of impact did it have on you?

MY FIRST PROPER HARDCORE RAVE I EVER EXPERIENCED WAS AN EVENT CALLED “ADRENODOME” THROWN IN NYC END OF 2022 BY MY FRIENDS LEXXY JAX AND GAUZE (GL00M13). BEING HONEST IT WAS KIND OF A LIFE-CHANGING EXPERIENCE, UNTIL THEN I’D ONLY EVER HEARD HARDCORE WHEN I DANCED TO IT BY MYSELF IN MY ROOM, AS WE DON’T HAVE ANYTHING REMOTELY CLOSE TO GABBER, JUNGLE, OR BREAKCORE IN MIAMI. MY FRIENDS AND I SAW THE FLYER AND DECIDED TO IMPULSE FLY TO NEW YORK TO CATCH IT. THERE I MET LEXXY, JANE (DEEJAY CHAINWALLET), VULKAUF, AND KEVO (LILKEVO303) FOR THE FIRST TIME WHO ARE STILL SOME OF CLOSEST FRIENDS AND BIGGEST INSPIRATIONS IN THE MODERN HARDCORE SCENE TODAY! THAT NIGHT I REMEMBER GOING FERAL, I DIDN’T KNOW HOW TO HAKKEN YET SO I WAS JUST JUMPING AROUND AND FLAILING FROM OPEN TILL CLOSE. I REMEMBER LOSING IT A FEW TIMES AND SMASHING MY HEAD INTO THE STAGE CAUSE I WAS SO INTO IT LOL. AFTER THE RAVE WE WALKED BACK IN LIKE 10 DEGREE WHETHER WITH SWEAT-SOAKED CLOTHES TO CATCH A FLIGHT TO ATLANTA WHERE MY FRIEND AVA (T3CHNOFAIRY) BOOKED ME FOR MY FIRST PROPER PERFORMANCE AT A RAVE THE NEXT DAY! IT WAS AN AMAZING TWO DAYS I THINK ABOUT IT QUITE OFTEN.

Q. When did you first start producing music or performing live/DJing?

I BEGAN PRODUCING MUSIC AROUND WHEN I WAS 12 YEARS OLD. I WAS INSPIRED TO DOWNLOAD FL STUDIO AFTER BEING INSPIRED BY ARTISTS WHO CONTRIBUTED TO ITS SOUNDTRACK. I WOULDN’T BE MAKING MUSIC WITHOUT HOMESTUCK. IT RULES. I WOULDN’T START PERFORMING UNTIL 2020 WITH THE RISE OF URL SHOWS DUE TO QUARANTINE, SCHOOLBOOK_DEPOSITORY PUT ME ON MY FIRST URL BILLS AND I HAD ALOT OF FUN SMASHING ALL MY FAVORITE SONGS TOGETHER AND MAKING CRAZY VISUALS WITH SOCK PUPPETS! FROM THEN ON THE FRIENDSHIPS I MADE FROM BEING INVOLVED WITH THESE SPACES LED ME TO BE ABLE TO PLAY LIVE IN THE REAL WORLD!

Q. What were you doing before GATERROR? How did the project come about? Did you launch Urgent Care Records around the same time?

I STARTED URGENT CARE RECORDS ABOUT A YEAR AFTER I STARTED PRODUCING UNDER GATERROR, IN DECEMBER OF 2022. IT CAME FROM ALOT OF ANGER AND FRUSTRATION I FELT WITH THE ENVIRONMENT OF SOUTH FLORIDA, WHERE WE GENUINELY HAVE NO REPRESENTATION FOR GABBER, JUNGLE, HARDCORE, BREAKCORE, OR LITERALLY ANYTHING ASIDE FROM BUSINESS TECHNO AND BOILED CHICKEN HOUSE. I WAS SICK OF SEEING THE FEW REPRESENTATIVES OF “RAVE” MASQUERADE THE CORPSE OF SOMETHING I CARE SO DEEPLY ABOUT AND PRETEND LIKE THEY INVENTED IT OUT OF THIN AIR! THIS LED ME TO START THROWING THE SHOWS I WANTED TO THROW, THE WAY I WANTED IT TO BE SHOWN, AND FULL OF VARIETY, PASSION, AND NOT AFRAID TO BE WEIRD AS FUCK. IT STARTED IN MY BACKYARD EARLY 2023 AND HAS BEEN STEADILY GROWING SINCE, AND ITS SO REASSURING TO SEE MORE AND MORE PEOPLE GET IT. I HOPE THAT THAT VOID GETS FILLED AFTER I’VE MOVED TO PHILLY, THAT SHIT SHOULD’NT DIE WITH ME. BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE. DIY OR DIE.

Q. GATERROR’s output ranges from extreme speedcore to ragga jungle, and even beautiful, melodic tracks like A MILLION LITTLE HELPING HANDS. If there’s a concept behind the project, what is it?

WHERE GATERROR IS TODAY JUST CAME ABOUT FROM MY NATURAL OF PROGRESSION OF THE MUSIC I WANTED TO MAKE AT DIFFERENT POINTS IN MY LIFE. I’VE CHANGED ALIASES SINCE I WAS 12 BUT TO ME IT STILL FEELS LIKE THE SAME PROJECT FROM WHEN I WAS MAKING HOMESTUCK AND LISA THE PAINFUL RPG FAN-SONGS. AT THE END OF THE DAY IT’S JUST A DIRECT REFLECTION OF ME AND ALL MY INFLUENCES! I LOVE THE CONTRAST BETWEEN EVIL HELL GABBER NOISE FUCKERY MUSIC AND THE PRETTY STUFF AND I’D LOVE TO LEAN MORE INTO THE MORE MELODIC STUFF SINCE I AM A MASSIVE FAN OF IDM AND AMBIENT IN THE LIKES OF I AM ROBOT AND PROUD, BOGDAN RACZYNSKI, AND SUBLIME JUPITER SNAKE DUO. THAT SHIT AFFECTS ME IN A DIFFERENT PLACE IN MY HEART, BUT WITH THE SAME INTENSITY AS TERROR NOISE SHIT DOES AND I THINK ITS WORTH EXPLORING. 

Q. In GATERROR’s live shows, you scream and seem to express something physically on stage. To me, it felt reminiscent of power electronics performance techniques. Have you actually been influenced by power electronics?

ABSOLUTELY! I TAKE IMMENSE INSPIRATION FROM POWER ELECTRONICS LIKE GERO, WHITEHOUSE, AND MASONNA, NOT ONLY SONICALLY BUT IN THEATRICS AND ATTITUDE. POWER ELECTRONICS WAS MY GATEWAY INTO GABBER, THERE’S SO MUCH OVERLAP IN EARLY GABBER AND TERROR LIKE BALD TERROR, EUROMASTERS, AND ALOT OF THE PSYCHOS ON INDUSTRIAL STRENGTH AND OBVIOUSLY BLOODY FIST PRETTY MUCH JUST MAKING POWER ELECTRONICS WITH A KICK UNDER IT! I PRETTY MUCH JUST WANNA MAKE HANATARASH YOU CAN DANCE TO.

Q. Your music carries elements of destruction and aggression. Are these a reflection of something within you? In other words, do you consciously use music as a way to express violence? Could you also explain your definition of “Gabberviolence”? 

DEFINITELY. I’M NOT AN ANGRY PERSON AT ALL, BUT THIS IS THE AVENUE OF SELF EXPRESSION I FEEL LIKE IS THE MOST AUTHENTIC, SCREAMING AND WRITHING IS ALL I EVER WANT TO DO AND I’M SO THANKFUL MUSIC AND PERFORMING HAVE GIVEN ME AN OUTLET TO DO SO AND SHARE THAT FREAK ENERGY WITH OTHER PEOPLE

WHO WANT TO DO THE SAME. WITHOUT IT, I THINK I WOULD GENUINELY EXPLODE. GABBERVIOLENCE TO ME IS GABBER OR ANY SUBSECTION OF “RAVE” MUSIC THAT ISN’T FOR DANCING. MADE WITH HATRED WITH THE INTENT TO KILL. WITH THE SAME PHILOSOPHY AND MINDSET OF CONVENTIONAL “EXTREME MUSIC” LIKE GRINDCORE AND POWERVIOLENCE BUT THROUGH AN AVENUE I FIND MUCH MORE EFFECTIVE AND ABRASIVE. MUSIC MADE WITH COMPLETE DISREGARD FOR THE LISTENER, AND WHEN PERFORMED LIVE SHOULD BE WITH THE INTENT TO HURT AND SCARE. TO ME, IT IS ANTI-RAVE AND ANTI-AUDIENCE AND MY INTENTION IS TO DESTROY THE BARRIER BETWEEN PERFORMER AND ATTENDEE AND ERADICATE THAT SENSE OF SAFETY. I WANT TO FLOOR THE GAS PEDAL FOR EVERYONE INVOLVED UNTIL SOMETHING GIVES.

Q. Could you talk about the concept and production of The Only Good Raver Is Dead Raver? What does the album title mean?

THE CONCEPT BASICALLY AN OUTWARD PROCLAMATION TO DIFFERENTIATE THE MUSIC I MAKE FROM BEING CATEGORIZED AS TYPICAL DANCE OR RAVE MUSIC AS I SEE ALOT OF OTHER GABBER RECORDS BEING TREATED. I SEE GABBER AS KILL MUSIC, I WANT PEOPLE TO KILL EACH OTHER TO IT. THE TITLE COMES FROM THE BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES SAMPLE USED IN CROSSED OUT’S SONG “PRACTICED HATRED”, ANOTHER INDICATOR OF THE POWER VIOLENCE INSPIRATION AND MENTALITY I DRAW SO HEAVILY FROM.


Q. What equipment are you currently using for music production? Could you walk us through your creative process?

RIGHT NOW I MAKE ALL OF MY MUSIC USING MY NINTENDO 2DS XL USING AN AMAZING FREEWARE TRACKER PROGRAM CALLED NITROTRACKER! I’VE BEEN USING IT PRETTY MUCH EXCLUSIVELY TO MAKE ALL MY MUSIC FOR ABOUT 2 YEARS NOW AND I LOVE IT! TRACKER BASED HARDCORE, ESPECIALLY PRODUCED ON THE AMIGA, ALWAYS APPEALED TO ME ESPECIALLY IN EXAMPLES LIKE BLOODY FIST, RADIOGRAFFITI, AND EARLY NEOPHYTE, BOTH SONICALLY THROUGH THE AMIGA’S PAULA CHIP BARBING EVERYTHING IN ROUGH, SNARLING 8-BIT MONO, AND ALSO THOUGH THE INCREDIBLY CREATIVE SAMPLE USAGE THE WORKFLOW OF TRACKERS CREATES. THE LIMITATIONS ARE SO FUN TO WORK WITH AND SUBSEQUENTLY HAVE BROUGHT MY MUSIC CLOSER TO MY INSPIRATIONS AND WITH MY DS, IN A WAY THAT’S PERSONAL TO ME AND I CAN PUSH FURTHER IN A DIRECTION I WANT TO HEAR MORE FROM! LIKE MY OWN LITTLE POCKET AMIGA!

Q. Your music is sample-based—what are your thoughts about the sources you choose to sample from? 

SAMPLE BASED MUSIC IS THE GREATEST MUSIC EVER KNOWN TO MAN. I THINK USING SAMPLES TO CREATE NEW SONGS FROM IT IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPACTFUL AND AUTHENTIC METHODS OF MUSIC PRODUCTION. IT IS A LOUD AND UNAPOLOGETIC BARING OF YOUR HEART AND INSPIRATIONS AND A DIRECT TRANSLATION OF THAT INSPIRATION INTO SOMETHING NEW, TRANSGRESSIVE AND FULL OF PASSION. LIKE AN AUDIBLE COLLAGE.
